Introduction: Vegetarianism has as its central axis the exclusion of food of animal origin. However, these changes in the eating pattern entail social challenges because the acquisition and consumption of food depends on various factors. Given the above, the objective of this study was to identify the strategies of food choice for consumption inside and outside the home that some vegetarian families in the Aburrá Valley, Colombia have.
Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study was carried out with 16 vegetarian families captured by sampling hidden populations and snowball technique. Through a semi-structured interview, we inquired about consumption outside the home and food choices for daily consumption.
Results: In food choices for consumption inside and outside the home, families prefer natural foods or food having a lower degree of processing and not containing health risk tracer nutrients, at the same time, which can result in a more conscious diet. Along the same lines, they choose establishments with a vegetarian denomination, however, participants report that sometimes there are difficulties in accessing these kinds of places in school environments.
Conclusions: Healthy and responsible consumption is currently being promoted. The strategies presented here are shown as viable alternatives to health and environmental problems.
